While visiting Savannah can get expensive, it doesn’t have to be. Check out a few things you can do for free or a small fee.

First Tuesday Tours of Savannah’s City Hall
On the first Tuesday of each month, you can get a free guided tour of City Hall. The Renaissance Revival building was finished in 1906 and features a gold-leafed dome. You will need to register in advance. Click here to register.

Tours of Bonaventure Cemetery
This cemetery holds many of Savannah’s notable dearly departed and has been featured in movies like “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” Bonaventure Cemetery is open 7 days a week and is always free to visit. If you’d like a tour, there are plenty of paid tour companies, but the Bonaventure Historical Society also offers free tours on the second Saturday and Sunday of each month.

Walk the Savannah Botanical Gardens
Located off Eisenhower Drive, this gorgeous botanical garden has blooms almost all year. You can visit for free, but if you have a group of more than 10 people, there is a fee. There is also a children’s area. You can find more about hours and what’s in bloom here.

Self-guided Tours of Laurel Grove North & South Cemeteries
Bonaventure isn’t the only historic cemetery in Savanah. Laurel Grove North and South are hidden gems of the city’s history. You can take a free self-guided tour through this website that covers the benevolent burials at both cemeteries. Laurel Grove started as one cemetery before the 37th Street connector divided them. If you visit, please be respectful. Both are still active cemeteries, and there may be funerals.

Savannah African Art Museum
The Savannah African Art Museum, at the corner of 37th and Abercorn Streets, is free to visit and offers an incredible collection of art from both West and Central Africa. Guided tours happen every half hour. The museum is also wheelchair accessible.

Tours of the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist
This gorgeous example of French Gothic Revivalist architecture is open for free self-guided tours daily unless there is a service. Wheelchair access is available on the Harris Stree side. A donation of $3 is suggested. Click here for more information.
